UFC 290: Volkanovski vs. Rodríguez

The event will feature two championship fights on the night and a UFC Middleweight title eliminator contest on the card. There is also expected to be a swansong match, as one fighter is set to say goodbye to the sport and retire after a successful career.

The headline fight and one of the title matches on the card is the bout that will be between Alexander Volkanovski and Yair Rodriguez. The contest is to unify the UFC Featherweight Championship, with both men holding individual titles.

The impressive Australian has a record of 25-2 in his MMA career and has successfully defended his Featherweight title since defeating Max Holloway in December 2019 at UFC 245. Volkanovski does usually go the distance with his flights as he normally wins via decision, but he did lose his most recent fight. He was beaten by a unanimous decision at UFC 284 in February 2023 against Islam Makhachev when he unsuccessfully challenged for the UFC Lightweight Championship; a match that was billed as the fight of the night.

Rodriguez is a Mexican fighter that has managed to compile a record of 15-3-1 over his MMA career and is the current interim champion. He managed to defeat Josh Emmett for the Interim UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 284, thus setting up the bout with the Australian in Las Vegas imminently. He can be an unpredictable fighter in terms of how he obtains wins, as he has shown that he can KO his opponents, make them submit, or go the distance and do enough to get the judges to score him favorably.

What else is on the UFC 290 fight card?

As mentioned, another championship bout is on the fight card, with a UFC Flyweight Championship match scheduled to take place. More is on the line this time around, so it will be interesting to see what will happen.

Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis will compete against each other in the Octagon in a UFC Middleweight title eliminator. The former is a former champion in this weight division, but his South African opponent will pose a huge challenge. He has a record that stands at 19-2, and has been successful in stopping his opponents before the allotted fight time is up.
