UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Rodriguez Results

Steve Garcia helped get things off to a bloody start at UFC Vegas 39 when he landed a nasty elbow on Charlie Ontiveros and opened up a nasty cut on the eye on his rival. Both lightweights swang for the fences in the early stages of the curtain raiser with Ontiveros landing some flashy kicks. Garcia’s ground and pound proved to be the difference as he did damage in both rounds before the fight was stopped in the second round.

Lupita or Loopy Godinez showcased her dominant grappling skills as she picked up a first round armbar finish against Silvana Gomez Juarez. The strawweight prospect celebrated her first submission win, moves to 6-1 and got her hands raised the first time inside the octagon. Not a bad nights work for the Mexican prospect.

The fight turned into a bloodbath after Rosa landed a back elbow at the start of round three, that shot opened up a huge gash on Jackson who lost a lot of blood. The fight went the distance and Jackson held on to pick up the much deserved win.

In the heavyweight division Alexander Romanov dominated Jared Vanderaa and picked up a ground and pound TKO in the second round. Romanov, who fights out of Moldova, has finished three out of four of his UFC encounters and is undefeated at 15-0. Surely Romanov will be rewarded with a ranked opponent in his next trip to the octagon, he’s ready.

Chris Gutierrez and Felipe Colares fought all the way to the judges scorecards in the bantamweight division. In what was a close fought contest, two out of three judges scored it for Gutierrez who

Mariya Agapova put on a striking masterclass enroute to submitting Sabina Mazo in the third round of their women’s flyweight contest. Agapova showed some patience and landed at will throughout the entire fight, a right hand at the start of round three hurt Mazo sending her down to the mt. Agapova jumped on her opponent instantly and grabbed a rear-naked choke to force the tap. Apapova, who represents the country of Kazakhstan, moves to 10-2 in her professional career.

Tim Elliott started well in his flyweight battle with Matheus Nicolau. The former title challenger had success on the feet and won the round on all three judges scorecards. Randy Brown almost knocked out Jared Gooden with a front kick in the first round of the co-main event. Gooden survived that shot, Brown came away with a dislocated big toe which hindered him for the rest of the fight. It was not enough to stop Brown taking home the win as he was awarded a unanimous decision by the judges.

The main event was a fantastic contest which went all five rounds. Marina Rodriguez won her second main event in a row as she overcame Mackenzie Dern on the scorecards. Rodriguez was the much superior fighter when the fight was standing. Dern was forced to swarm with punches in order to close the distance, clinch and take the fight to the mat. Dern managed to do that in round two and had her advarary in big trouble at times. Rodriguez showed great heart and a solid gas tank as she grew into the fight and took home the unanimous decision. This was a really enjoyable fight to watch. Dern can hold her head high in defeat.
