UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs Pettis – Results

Dustin Poirier scored the biggest win of his career with a third-round TKO finish over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis at UFC Norfolk.

The end came in bizarre fashion with Anthony Pettis tapping out while Poirier was attempting to transition into guard in the third round. Poirier had been dominating the fight all the way through, cutting Pettis under his eye in the first round and opening up a massive gash on his eyebrow with an elbow in the second round.

In his post-fight interview with Jon Anik, Poirier called out the winner of Eddie Alvarez and Justin Gaethje at UFC 218 in Detroit, Michigan.

In the co-main event, Matt Brown may have secured the perfect ending to his UFC career with a first round knockout of The Ultimate Fighter season one winner Diego Sanchez.

Brown, who hadn’t won a fight since UFC 189 in July 2015, put Sanchez up against the cage and finished him early in the first with an elbow just to the back of the ear.

Leading into the fight, Brown had declared that his fight with Sanchez would be his final one but rolled back on that statement during the week, stating he would take some time over Christmas to consider his position.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Andre Arlovski managed to snap a five-fight losing streak with a decisive unanimous decision victory over Junior Albini. Arlovski hadn’t won in the UFC since he fought Frank Mir back at UFC 192 in September of 2015.

Further down the fight card, there were impressive wins for Raphael Assuncao and Clay Guida. Assuncao scored his first finish in the Octagon since June of 2013 with a third round one-punch knock out over Matthew Lopez. Guida got his first finish since April 2008 with a first-round TKO stoppage over lightweight veteran Joe Lauzon.
