Matt Brown: Jon Jones is ‘so selfish’

Matt “The Immortal” Brown took to the airwaves yesterday to give his thoughts on the Jon Jones affair.

As most will now be aware, Jon Jones was handed an indefinite suspension and had his light heavyweight title taken from him by the UFC following his arrest for leaving the scene of an accident in New Mexico last week. Speaking on the latest edition of FOX Sports’ The Great MMA Debate podcast, perennial 170-pound contender backed the UFC’s decision to strip Jones of the belt.

“Me, personally, I think it was the right thing to strip the title,” Brown said. “For PR purposes they have to strip the title, it’s the right thing to do.”

Jones’ issues with failed drug tests earlier in the year aside, Brown feels that the former 205-pound champion’s recent actions are inexcusable.

“I never wanted to throw Jon Jones under the bus for the coke, I don’t give a fuck if you go party or the other things that he’s done,” Brown said. “This one I didn’t like because he left a pregnant woman at the scene hurt. There’s no way he didn’t know. I don’t believe for a second he didn’t know what he was doing.”

Despite accusing Jones of being ‘selfish’ and ‘not understanding the consequences’, Brown stated that he does want to see Jones fight again, and that ultimately, he doesn’t care what he does outside of the Octagon.

“When it comes down to it, I want to see the best fighters in the world fight the best fighters in the world,” Brown said. “The fact is, the champion is the guy who never lost. Everything outside of the cage is meaningless. I want to see motherfuckers fight. I don’t care what he does.

“I don’t care that Mayweather has these domestic abuse things. There’s a million motherfuckers with domestic abuse that I hate just as much for that. If they are great fighters I want to watch them be great fighters. That’s why I watch the sport.”

Brown is clearly having some trouble reconciling his disdain for Jones’ recent actions with his desire to watch him fight; a feeling with which many MMA fans can relate. ‘The Immortal’ concluded the discussion with some strong sentiments.

“I have all the sympathy for his struggles with drugs and things like that, but no matter how much you’re struggling with that, you leave the scene of a pregnant woman being hurt? I don’t give a fuck about you no more.”

Brown, who is coming off consecutive losses to Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks, is scheduled to fight Tim Means on July 11 at UFC 189 in Las Vegas.
