Chael Sonnen to rematch Forrest Griffin at 205lbs on 29th December

Chael Sonnen’s next fight will be contested at light heavyweight, and it will be against a familiar foe.

Sonnen, the former middleweight title contender, will meet Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound bout on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas. Sonnen announced the fight on Tuesday’s episode of “UFC Tonight” on FUEL TV.

The card, which is expected to be UFC 155, will take place in Las Vegas and will air on pay-per-view.

Sonnen and Griffin squared off on Sept. 6, 2003, at IFC: Global Domination in Denver before either were UFC stars. Griffin won the fight via triangle-choke submission

“I could go up to 205 and I could take Jon Jones’ belt the same as I could take his candy on Halloween. [He’s] a little punk kid, I’d snatch it away all I want. But there’s something to be said in sportsmanship for earning your shot. And on the 29th of December, I’m going to go through Forrest to do it.” said Sonnen

UFC president Dana White confirmed the change of weight class

“Chael wants to fight at 205,” White said. “He felt he had his run at 185 and now he wants to make a run at the title at 205.”

Since then, both fighters have gone on to become two of the biggest stars in the UFC, although in different weight classes. Sonnen (27-12-1) is coming off a middleweight title loss to Anderson Silva last month at UFC 148, while Griffin (19-7) defeated Tito Ortiz on the same card.
