Joe Duffy Announces Retirement

Joe Duffy stepped into the octagon for what is set to be his last performance in the UFC’s octagon. The Donegal man stepped in to face Spaniard Joel Alvarez.

The bout which took place on ‘UFC Fight Island’ did not go to plan for ‘Irish’ Joe Duffy he was submitted by a guillotine choke in the first round. The Tristar trained athlete dropped his third fight on the bounce. Soon after the bout he announced his retirement on Instagram.

Thank you all so much for all your messages of support all week. I have been blessed on this journey in MMA and am truly grateful for every experience. I felt great all through camp and even warming up, I believed I was back to my former self then when I went in there it just falls to pieces. I think it’s time to realize that I haven’t got what it takes any more. Congrats to Joel Alvarez and thank you to the UFC for all the opportunities. I’m sorry I didn’t achieve what I set out to achieve for my fans, family, friends and myself but it just wasn’t meant to be. I am officially retiring from MMA competition.

Duffy holds notable wins over UFC fighters Conor McGregor and Norman Parke finishing both fighters by submission. He took 3 years off to pursue his boxing career but returned to MMA in 2014 winning two straight for Cage Warriors.

Duffy racked up a UFC record of 4-4 in the UFC. Duffy had been hampered by injuries over the past couple of years. He officially retires from Mixed Martial Arts with a record of 16-5-0.
